Last September 22nd, the ICT4Water cluster celebrated the most important event for technology transfer and networking concerning to the application of new technologies in the water sector: the ICT4Water Open Day. The event was held in Barcelona, at Cibernàrium Auditorium, Media-TIC building.
Mr. Gabriel Anzaldi (Smart Management Systems Unit, Eurecat) gave the welcome presentation in which he emphasized ICT related to smart technology as a major current research and investment field internationally and a priority remarked on the EIP Water SIP.
Mr Anzaldi also highlighted one of the main outcomes of the cluster, which actually is the development of the Roadmap “Emerging Topics and Technology Roadmap for Information and Communication Technologies for Water Management”, a blueprint which is carried out through different actions:
- Exchange of information: common website, contacts…
- Special sessions in Conferences/Publications (WDSA, IAHR, CCWI, HIC, ICT4Water Open Day Barcelona…)
- Common development of standards and standardization
- Common papers
- Links with/participation in Water EIP relevant action groups
It is worth saying that, as mentioned by Mr. Anzaldi, this Roadmap fits perfectly with Juncker’s agenda priorities, in terms of a new boost for jobs, growth and investment, a connected digital single market, better online access to digital goods and services, creation of an environment where Digital Networks and services can prosper, creation of a resilient energy union with a forward-looking Climate Change policy and a deeper and fairer internal market with a strengthened industrial base.
This welcoming presentation was followed by other inspiring presentations led by Mr. Jordi Agustí Verges, General Manager at ACA (Catalan Water Agency – Government of Catalonia), about the “Regional challenges and needs for new technologies in the water sector”, and Mr. Joan Mas Albaiges, Head Digital Area at Eurecat, whose presentation looked througly into Eurecat, the Technology Center of Catalonia.
Hereafter, Ms. Grazyna Wojcieszko, Project Officer of the European Commission (DG ConNECT Unit H5 – Smart Cities & Sustainability), Mr. Tom Baur, Senior Specialist of Secretariat EIP Water, Mr. Gabriel Anzaldi and Mr. Miquel Rovira presented the challenges that need to be addressed in the future of the ICT for water management sector with focus in the recently launched H2020 programs.
The Urbanwater project also participated actively in the session, contributing to present the newest relevant findings and developments lead by ICT4Water Cluster. Mr. Albert Rodríguez, Head of Software Engineering Department at Ateknea Solutions Catalonia, described the current progress of the project, which is in its final validation phase. Currently, the UrbanWater system is being validated in 3 different sites: Janovice (CZ), Almería (ES) and Tavira (PT). In addition, the UrbanWater consortium is carrying out offline validation of particular modules with 3rd parties not involved in the project consortium.
Some other members of the UrbanWater consortium were also present in the Open Day, concretely Mr. Arnaud Broussel (Research Engineer, Ateknea Solutions); Eva Martínez (R&D Department, FCC Aqualia), member of the EIP Water Group; Mr. Álvaro Rodríguez and Mr. Rafael Sánchez-Diezma (HYDS) and Mr. Hrvoje Novak (UNIZG-FER).
